Grandpa’s Antiques Photo’s in Surfers Paradise was held up at knifepoint by a Caucasian male last Thursday night.

Shop assistant Karin Von Behrens said the guy staggered into the shop with a knife in his hand asking for money.

“He wasn’t threatening though because he was slurring and he couldn’t walk properly.”

“I told him to go way and that we didn’t have any money, then he got really annoyed,” said another shop assistant.

Before the man left he stabbed the computer keyboard with his knife, snatched a stamp from the counter and then proceeded to whack his head on the roller door before walking out of the shop.

The man was arrested shortly after the robbery. Police said he now faces up to five years in prison.

Australian National Finals Rodeo

•April 1, 2009 • Leave a Comment

Brace yourself and get ready to be taken on a wild ride. On January 8th, the 2009 Australian National Finals Rodeo (ANFR) kicked off at the Gold Coast Exhibition Centre in one of the hottest states in the country, Queensland. Even though our sunburnt country might be more famous for golden beaches and hot surfers chicks, rodeo enjoys huge success in Australia. We Aussies go out of our way to host high quality rodeos with our own national style and flair. This year seven stock contractors provided a whopping 180 bulls and 160 horses to one of the most popular events in Australian rodeo history. The ANFR consists of five rounds of competition. The rider with the highest total score on five bulls will earn the Australian Championship Title. Bull riding is considered not only being the premier rodeo event but also the most popular and dangerous out of the six categories showcased during the competition.

Yeeha, is only one out of many words to describe the spectacular four-day rodeo where cowboys and cowgirls from across the nation were gathered to watch 15 of Australia’s finest bull riders put their life on the line against the fiercest animal in the land.

While one round in the arena on a 1500 to 2000 pound bull of pure muscle who wants you to get the hell of its back might seem like a suicide mission for the average Joe, the country’s most talented riders did not seemed fazed by the challenge at all. After the first four exciting rounds the cowboys were in exceptionally good physical shape, however, as the final round was about to start the anticipation amongst the top competitors reached new heights.

Over 3800 people sat on the edge of their seats as the last out of five rounds kicked off while the ‘Eye of Tiger’ blared out of the speakers. As David Kennedy entered the arena on a bull the size of Ayers Rock the audience cheered and stomped their feet. A mini dust storm was created as he rode Hot Chilli and snatched the 2009 Australian Championship Title right under the noses of Aussie favourites Riley Carter and Chris Lowe. “This is definitely one of the better days in my life,” says Kennedy with a big smile on his face. He admits that his best ride throughout his whole riding career was during the second last round in this year’s finals on Robert McPhees 2000 pound bull Daylight. “I scored 87 points. I couldn’t stop smiling and I felt on top of the world.”

But Kennedy is no rookie in this bone jangling sport. Since the age of 11 he has been riding and competing. “I come from a country family and when I was little we had some stock in the yard, so one day I went on them and after that I just kept on going,” he explains. The 24-year-old has always had his eye on the prize and believes the more effort you put in the more you get out. Now, he can enjoy the fruits of his success and with an Australian Title under his belt things are definitely going the right way for this impeccable rider. Next year he wants to move to America with his wife Hayley and nine-month-old daughter Pippa to develop his riding career further. After becoming the Australian bull riding Champion we assume the sky is the limit for this incredible talented rider. When he was asked who his toughest competition had been during the finals, he replied “definitely Riley Carter.”

The competition was fierce but Kennedy won with a 140 point score. Second place went to Riley Carter with a 100 point score and third place went to Chris Lowe with an 80 point score. Carter is absolutely one to watch out for. The 27-year-old has been riding and competing since he was 14 years of age. “My life motto is to always stay positive and never stop trying,” he exclaims. Next year he plans to head to America with his girlfriend to chase the silver & gold buckle dream. And with this though cowboy’s positive attitude and determination, there is no doubt that he will succeed.

Steve Hilton, general manager of the Australian Pro Rodeo Association says, “He rates this year’s competition, eight out of ten. To be part of a venue like this is great.” Hilton has enjoyed 20 odd years as a rodeo competitor but for the past 16 last years he has worked as a manager for one of the biggest rodeo associations in the country. “I would say the most positive aspect of being involved in this profession for over 30 years is that I’ve been able to see a distinct progress, rodeo has come a long way,” he explains.

Well, one thing is for sure this rough sport is not for the faintest of heart but for the toughest of men.

A star is born and she’s Aussie

•April 1, 2009 • 3 Comments

When Shea Fisher was a little girl she put a mark on the wall each day so she could see if she had grown taller. Like many other young girls she dreamt of being a catwalk model. But with a barrel racing champion mum and bull riding champion father, fate lead her on to an entirely different path. The 20-year-old has been riding and competing for as long as she can remember. “Basically I’ve been on the road travelling with my parents since I was born,” she says in her husky alto voice.

She purses her pouty lips, drops her chin, lifts her eyes confidently and says “I was never a shy child and from a young age I knew I would be a performer of some sort. I’ve always wanted to be at the centre of attention.” But her confidence doesn’t make her seem conceited. The truth is this country girl has worked hard for her success.

Riding and competing since she was three, Shea says horse riding runs in her genes. “I wouldn’t be competing in rodeo if it wasn’t for my family. They have taught me everything from steer riding to barrel racing.” Shea has had many breathtaking moments during her career but admits winning the Australian Rodeo Association Junior Barrel Racing Title at only nine years of age is by far one of her happiest memories. “I had the most exciting time receiving that first award. I got this big trophy buckle and mum and dad sat in the audience watching proud as punch,” she says. Even though her main focus has been been barrel racing, this tough rodeo competitor was the first girl in Australia to make it to the national finals in steer riding. “I used to love hanging out with the boys. But they were really tough competitors though,” she laughs.

By now, Shea has been riding for nearly 20 years and she has many awards and titles under her belt. So it probably doesn’t come as a surprise that she was one out of 15 barrel racers who qualified for the Australian National Finals Rodeo this year. Even though she didn’t win, Shea admits she had a blast.”I rode my mum’s mayor Gemma, she’s really easy to ride plus so much fun.” The gorgeous country girl also enjoyed huge support from her family during the finals. “My dad was judging and mum was there to cheer,” she says. Before entering the arena during competitions her mum usually tells her to go out and have fun. Shea says she loves the thrill of competing. “The adrenalin rush you get right before you’re about to start is the best part. It’s like you get the rush, the heart starts pounding and when you’re out there you don’t hear the loudspeakers or what everyone is saying. You’re just totally zoned in and immersed in the moment. It’s wonderful,” she confesses.

It’s clear Shea feels at home in the arena but riding isn’t her one and only focus anymore. At the age of nine she moved to the US with her mum Joanne and father Eddie Fisher. They lived on a ranch in New Mexico not far from Roswell. Not only did the gutsy young girl learn to drive a truck but she was also mustering and branding cattle every week. When she wasn’t living a true cowgirl life on the ranch, she was travelling around competing at rodeos with her family. The diverse Aussie girl admits she got totally hooked on country music whilst living in the US. When the Fisher family moved back to Australia Shea started performing in school plays. Singing since she was ten, Shea says she was born to perform. “I used to sing in front of mirrors,” she laughs.

Today, she has a record deal with ABC Universal and a debut album titled ‘Everyday Girl’ to show for. She describes her music as being positive and uplifting. “I want to be a good role model and I think that’s part of the reason why I never sing about being down.” The starlet likes to think of herself as being a girl version of Keith Urban. “He’s a bit crossover and I believe my market is very young and vibrant,” she says. Next year Shea plans to move to the US to develop her singing career further. And it probably doesn’t come as a surprise that she has landed a record deal over there as well. Her next album will be released in the US mid next year.

Even though this hard working girl is willing to put her heart and soul into her careers, she still enjoys being a normal teenager. “I think it’s great to get home and do normal stuff like go to the gym, train horses and hang out with friends.” But she admits juggling two careers can be quite a challenge. “If I’m not singing I’m competing, I try to put them hand in hand.”

When asked about her plans for the future, Shea prickles a bit, saying, “I’ll try to achieve everything I want in life. If it doesn’t work it doesn’t work but at least when I’m old I can say that I gave it a go.” And no doubt she’ll use every weapon in her arsenal – confidence, determination and laser beam focus to succeed.

Gaming Mania

•April 1, 2009 • 2 Comments

When Samantha Warren moved in to a shared accommodation with four other people, the last thing that was on her mind was falling in love. The 27 year-old exchange student from England was in her last semester doing psychology and was determined to kick ass at university. But that was before she met one of her fellow flatmates. In Samantha’s eyes Joe looked like he didn’t belong in this world, he was too beautiful. He was tall with dark intriguing eyes, pale impeccable skin and had a body that belongs on the cover of a high profile magazine. Joe had all the qualities she wanted plus he was starting up a gaming café that was funded by his well off parents. She instantly thought he was a keeper.

As time went by reality slowly started to hit Samantha. Her way too perfect boyfriend wasn’t flawless, he had a serious compulsion to play online games. “After Joe opened up his gaming café I never saw him even though I lived with him, it was heart wrenching,” she explains. Samantha soon found out he wasn’t working when he was away. He was playing World of Warcraft around the clock. “He has ADD and was on Dexamphetamine and abused the pills to stay awake to play, sometimes he went three days without sleeping.” Samantha saw her boyfriend drifting away from reality, friends and family. “There was nothing I could do. And he started to pull me down as well and my grades were plummeting. I had to move out to regain focus on life. As far as I know he is still playing.”

Online games are an entrenched feature of the daily lives of many people and are a major source of fun and entertainment. For most people game playing is integrated into their life in a health manner but for many it’s becoming an addiction. Online games such as World of Warcraft have the ability to transform people from being outgoing, active and socially skilled to becoming introverted, lonely and depressed. “Many players use these games to escape from underlying problems and often they lose a sense of reality too,” says Griffith University Lecturer and Psychologist, Peta Stapleton.

World of Warcraft is a multiplayer online game that connects thousands of players through the Internet in a persistent virtual environment. The game is based on a Tolkienesque high fantasy motif where players can create characters with distinctive looks and qualities such as intellect, strength and stamina. Players can easily step into their new self created identity and get immersed in a new world. The game basically never ends so there is no reason to stop playing. And since there is no way to beat the game, the goal is character progression. Gaming ‘addiction’ really started to turn into a problem with the advent of World of Warcraft or ’World of Warcrack’ that some call it. Disturbingly it reached 10.7 million subscribers worldwide this year and is the number one game to pull people out of the real world.

Nicole Wallace knows what it’s like to wake up after four hours of sleep, stumble into the kitchen and make some coffee to try and kick some life back into her body before going to work. The 24 year-old suffer from sleep deprivation after World of Warcraft became her new friend. She left the U.S six months ago with the intention of experience Australia and all it has to offer only to find herself hooked on an online game. “I never really played that much at all but when I got to Australia I decided it would be a good way of staying in touch with my friends back home as they are really into it. I don’t have much of a social life here but I do have my online friends so I guess I’m not that lonely,” she says and laughs. Her friends in the U.S are usually online at weird hours so she often sleeps through her alarm. “I swear I’m going get fired soon. I know I have to stop playing but I can’t I love it too much,” she explains.

Wallace is far from alone as high proportions of the population are now ‘addicted’ to online games. “I’ve noticed with gaming addicts that control seems to be the main driving force behind it. There is a certain amount of control maintained in the unreal world of gaming but still enough unknown elements to keep gaming interesting. The real world is not that controlled,” says Life Coach and Counsellor, Luke McDonald. “These people usually have obsessive personality traits and focus too much on one thing. They can’t sit down for an hour and play they have to keep doing it so they lock themselves in for ages,” he says. Many players nurture their obsession by playing long hours everyday and neglects family, friends and partners. “But it’s not the game that is addictive, its certain people who got personality traits that are vulnerable to become addicted to playing, “says Dr Stapleton.

Research shows that people who are prone to get hooked on these games usually are loners that are more inclined to spend time on their own. “There is a fine line of which is acceptable in society and an activity becomes an addiction when you stop doing other normal activities like showering, eating and sleeping,” she explains. These days some psychologists says the gaming problem have been based less on scientific facts and more upon media hysteria. While some, of course thinks these games have inducing and reinforcing features, others claims ‘online game overuse’ is due to the obsessive nature of some gamers. Research shows that an estimated 40% of the 10 million subscribers of World of Warcraft are addicted. If that doesn’t make you cringe, many gamers replicate what they see or do in the game.”We have heard stories of people who have been killed because they are acting out on games,” Dr Stapleton points out. But this is far from the only problem this game has to offer, it breaks up families, relationships and gamers often lose touch with reality.

If you Google World of Warcraft, you get 44.100.000 hits in 0.06 seconds. Amongst the hits is a support group called Wow Detox that has numerous postings from gamers sharing their experiences. A recent posting from a woman identified only as number

32844, says she wants to sue the creators of World of Warcraft after her husband who used to hang his shirts up by their colour now has stopped showering and sleeping. The woman also explains how her husband who just got fired from his job locks himself in his home office and plays excessively. Now, you are probably wondering what in the world motivates people to keep playing these games. “Any game that gives rewards is addictive. These games stimulates the pleasure centre in the brain and releases dopamine which is the equivalent to morphine, says Dr Phillip Morris from the Gold Coast Institute of Mental Health. The natural drug that is released in the brain while playing gives an instant rush in the body. And unsurprisingly this natural high becomes an obsession and starts to dominate the gamer’s life. “When games become predictable, they become boring and the novelty wears off, that is why most games release rewards not too often but frequently. It’s the unexpected rewards that motivate people to keep playing. When dopamine is released people experience an arousing buzz which becomes the driving force behind playing the game,” Dr Morris explains. Dopamine or endorphins are natural chemicals that get relased into the bloodstream and ends up in the brain when engaging in an absorbing activity. Ultimately, these feel good chemicals changes a person’s mood dramatically making them feel happy, content and distracted from the stresses and strains of life. It probably doesn’t come as a surprise that these adrenalin rushes can become very addictive. “Anything that can stimulate or activate the reward centre in the brain can become addictive,” Mr Morris exclaims.

Isaac Webber, a 24 year old business student knows what it feels like to experience the thrill of winning battles and advancing to the next level. For two years straight he was hooked on World of Warcraft. “I just loved the feeling I got when I saw my game tactics work. The satisfaction I got from winning battles and getting better just kept me going,” he says. As with many other gaming enthusiasts, the constant craving to play this game took a hold of his life. “It became the only thing I wanted to do and when I wasn’t at home playing I thought about playing. It’s a dangerously addictive game,’ he exclaims. But is doesn’t have to be a downer sitting at home by yourself playing as naturally released chemicals in the brain keeps you happy. And as good as it might sound just thinking about a certain activity i.e. playing can release those sought after chemicals in the brain. “The anticipation leading up to the activity automatically releases endorphins in the brain even before they have started playing,” says Dr Stapleton. Isaac is now an ex player who admits having an addictive personality. “I’ve always done everything till I get really good at it.” But even though he was happy and content with his excessive playing he realised how badly it affected his social life and his intimate relationships and decided to quit. He went ‘cold turkey’ after failing nearly every subject at university.

It can probably be a bit depressing for gamers to think about the only thing they care about has to end. But experts believe the first step to overcoming an addiction is to acknowledge there is a problem.” It’s a good idea to start off with a reality check,” Dr Stapleton says. There are ways of behaving that isn’t normal compared to the rest of the population. “For the gamers it’s ok as they might not think they’re hurting anyone or that they are in anyone’s way,” she adds. But the fact is that people around them might be hurting as a result of their compulsion to escape from reality. Thoughts and emotions usually go hand in hand with any addiction and usually there are underlying problems that cause compulsive behaviour. Life Coach Luke Mc Donald says there is no normal approach to treating an addiction. “You have to use a different approach for every individual, their personality and their life situation.” So if you’re not already hooked on World of Warcraft, think about the consequences before signing up. And for those of you who already are, help is readily available if you have the courage to ask for it.

Girl shaves head in the name of dead father

•April 1, 2009 • 4 Comments

Surrounded by her family and encouraged by her school mate’s, 11-year-old Karen Whebell shaved her head in the name of her dead father and the Leukaemia Foundation at Hillcrest Christian School at the Gold Coast yesterday.

Her father Tony Wheebell was diagnosed with non-hodgins lymphoma almost two years ago.

Sadly he lost his battle only one day before his daughter had planned to shave her head as a symbol of support for people suffering with cancer.

But that didn’t stop the courageous little girl, her father’s death made her even more determined to support the cause.

“I’m going to be shaving my head to show my love and support for dad,” Karen said.

While singing the national anthem moments before the brave shave, the room was filled with tears and sniffles.

But by the first strike of the clippers, sorrow turned into hysteria. Two hundred and eighty school kids stomped their feet and cheered her on.

“I think she is so incredible brave and amazing. I would never been able to do it,” said classmate Emile Milnes.

“When Karen’s dad lost all his hair she wanted to lose her hair as well, so they could be baldies together,” said Mum.

“I think she is a very courageous little girl that loves her dad very much,” she added.

Karen has spent the past three months raising money for the Leukaemia Foundation.Tracy Lowry, Regional Fundraiser for the Leukaemia Foundation said at the beginning of the foundation we asked the world to shave, little did we know that an 11-year-old girl would raise over 22000 dollars.

“She is now the country’s second highest individual fundraiser.”

Her selfless act is a reminder for us all.

New cancer detection technology is launched

•March 25, 2009 • Leave a Comment

A groundbreaking new technology designed to discover the early stages of breast cancer has been launched.

The Sure Touch Visual Mapping System is a digital sensing device that gives doctors the opportunity to detect malignant tumours by scanning the breast tissue.

Dr Graeme Langford from the Gold Coast Breast Centre said the machine is picking up abnormalities in a breast which equates picking up lumps in a breast that you may not be able to feel.

‘Sure Touch’ is totally different to an ultra sound and totally different to a mammogram from what it actually detects,” he said.

However, there are mixed opinions about the procedure.

Dr Phillip Morris from the Gold Coast Institute of Mental Health said it is certainly not a replacement for mammography and breast screening.

“It’s an adjunct that will help support mammogram.”

Unlike a mammogram the ‘Sure Touch’ procedure is completely pain free and don’t expose the breast to any radiation. So the simple and quick scan might be a good option for women who have had a mammogram and felt pain and don’t like radiation. But we are warned.

“Women should continue to have their mammograms according to the current protocols,” said Dr Morris.

“My sense is that it will always be a supplement to mammography but it will not take over.”

“We are not trying to compete with a mammogram, it’s an additive investigation,” Dr Langford said.

“It’s another option and another breakthrough.”

The Sure Touch Visual Mapping System is developed in the US and approved by Australia’s Therapeutic goods administration.

The procedure is available at four clinics at the Gold Coast.
